What is clipping in force feedback?
It is what happens when the force the game asks for is greater than the base can produce, so peaks are flattened and everything above that ceiling feels the same. The result is a loss of detail at exactly the moment you most want it, usually under heavy load in a fast corner. More torque raises the ceiling. So does lowering the in game force setting, which costs nothing.
Is more torque more realistic?
Not directly. A real steering rack transmits far more force than any consumer base, but a sim wheel is not trying to reproduce steering weight. It is trying to reproduce information. Beyond the point where peaks stop clipping, extra torque adds fatigue rather than information, which is why experienced drivers often run high torque bases at moderate settings.
Where would the extra money go instead?
A load cell brake. Braking is measured in force by a real pedal and in travel by a cheap sim pedal, and consistent brake pressure is the largest single amateur lap time gain available. If the choice is between a stronger base and a better brake, the brake wins by a wide margin.
Is the R12 harder to mount?
It is heavier and it pushes harder, so it asks more of the frame. Both want a rigid stand or a cockpit rather than a desk clamp. If your current mount is marginal at 9 Nm it will be worse at 12, and the extra torque you paid for will be absorbed by the frame moving instead of reaching your hands.
